종교개혁

기독교가 설립자의 원칙을 충실히 따라 왔더라면, 기독교국가들은 지금보다 통합되어있었을 것이며 더 행복했을 것이다… 교회의 우두머리 로마에 가까울수록 신앙심이 부족하다는 사실만큼 기독교가 타락했다는 사실을 잘 보여주는 증거는 없을 것이다. 기독교가 어떤 원칙에 기초하여 세워졌는지, 또 이러한 원칙이 현재 교회의 행실과 얼마나 다른지 따져본다면 기독교가 응분의 처벌을 받거나 파멸할 날이 멀지 않았다는 데 누구라도 동의할 것이다.

루터는 무수한 이미지로 채워진 교회와 화려한 의례를 반대한다. 수천 년을 이어져 내려온 문자 대 이미지의 갈등이 종교개혁의 핵심으로 다시 점화된 것이다. 종교개혁이 기본적으로 ‘신약의 내용’으로 되돌아가자는 운동이었다면, 우뇌적 가치를 중시했을 것이다. 하지만 안타깝게도 종교개혁의 핵심은 ‘문자를 인지하는 과정’에 있었다. —543

칼뱅은 하느님의 나라를 만들기 위해 여자들을 더욱 엄격하게 통제했다. 결혼 전 섹스를 한 여자는 추방하거나 물에 빠뜨려 죽였다. 간통—사형, 신성모독—사형, 우상숭배—사형, 항문삽입—사형, 수간(동물과 섹스)—사형, 이단—사형, 마술—사형. 낙태는 뭐 고민할 필요도 없었는데, 결혼도 안한 여자가 임신한 것이 들키면 그 자리에서 물에 집어넣었기 때문이다. 이러한 행위를 했다는 자백을 받아내기 위한 방법으로 일상적으로 고문을 자행했다. —559

칼뱅은 엄격한 규율로 제네바 시민들을 통제했다. 규칙을 조금이라도 어기거나 칼뱅의 의견에 반대하는 사람은 가차없이 고문하고 죽였다. 규율이 얼마나 엄격했느냐면, 교회 예배시간에 세 번 지각하면 사형.

프로테스탄트 종교개혁에서 눈을 씻고도 찾아 볼 수 없는 것이 있는데 바로 기쁨, 사랑, 자비, 웃음, 아름다움이다. 8세기 기사도, 9세기 마리아신앙, 10세기 신비주의, 11세기 넘치는 호기심, 12세기 열린 마음, 13세기 욕정, 14세기 개인들의 독창성, 15세기 휴머니즘이 있었다면, 16세기에는 비참한 무기력을 설파하는 우울한 교리만이 있다. —567
