Only the Foolish and the Dead Don’t Change

변하지 않는 것은 바보와 죽은 사람뿐이다.

As a young lawyer, Abraham Lincoln had to plead two similar cases one day. He happened to get the same judge for both cases and both cases involved the same principle of law. In the case heard in the morning, Lincoln appeared for the defendant. He made an eloquent plea and easily won his case.

에이브러햄 링컨은 변호사로 일하던 젊은 시절, 어느 날 비슷한 사건 두 개를 동시에 변호하게 되었다. 우연히도 두 사건 모두 판사도 같았고, 적용해야 할 법조항도 모두 동일했다. 오전에 열린 재판에서 링컨은 피고인을 변호했다. 설득력 있는 주장으로 간단하게 재판에서 이겼다.

Ironically, in the case heard in the afternoon, Lincoln happened to be acting for the plaintiff. Lincoln was arguing this case with the same eagerness, only from the opposite point of view, when the judge, somewhat amused, asked Lincoln why he had changed his point of view since the morning. “Your Honor, I could have been wrong this morning,” declared Lincoln, “but I know I’m right this afternoon.”

두 번째 재판은 그날 오후 열렸는데, 문제는 이 재판에서는 원고를 변호해야 한다는 것이었다. 링컨은 피고를 변호할 때와 마찬가지로 열의를 다해 원고를 옹호했다. 관점이 달라졌을 뿐이었다. 신기한 듯 쳐다보던 판사가 링컨에게 왜 오전과 생각이 달라졌느냐고 물었다. 링컨은 이렇게 대답했다.

존경하는 재판장님, 오전엔 제 판단이 틀렸을 수도 있습니다. 확실한 건 지금 제 판단이 옳다는 것입니다.

The moral of this true story is: Don’t get stuck in your beliefs. Only the foolish and the dead don’t change. Rigid thinking limits your ability to see things in a different light. Today’s world is changing at an unprecedented pace. To deal effectively with this rapid change, you must ensure that your opinions, beliefs, and values aren’t carved in stone.

이 이야기에서 말하고자 하는 것은, 신념에 얽매이지 말라는 것이다. 바보와 죽은 사람만이 변하지 않는다. 경직된 사고는 다양한 각도에서 사물을 바라볼 수 있는 능력을 가로막는다. 오늘날 세계는 유례없이 빠르게 변하고 있다. 이렇게 급변하는 현실에 발맞추려면 자신의 견해, 신념, 가치관이 돌처럼 굳어있는 것은 아닌지 자주 점검해보아야 한다.

Our problems—particularly the whoopers—begin with our belief systems. For some strange reason, we find it easier to hang on to belief systems that don’t work than to adopt new ones that do. For example, you may subscribe to the belief that hard work is the only way to success and happiness. Such being the case, you may want to look at hard work from a different point of view.

우리가 겪는 문제들은 대부분 신념체계에서 시작된다. 거대한 거짓말은 더욱 그렇다. 신기한 사실은, 더 이상 가치 없는 낡은 믿음체계와 유용하게 사용할 수 있는 새로운 믿음체계 중에서 하나를 고르라고 하면 많은 사람들이 낡은 것을 선택한다는 것이다. 예컨대 아직도 고된 노동만이 성공과 행복으로 가는 길이라고 믿는 사람이 많다. 그러한 믿음은 이제 버려야 한다.
