문장에 일관성있는 형태를 부여하는 원칙은 다음과 같다.
기본원리: 도입부에서 핵심요점을 드러내라
주어를 최대한 빨리 보여준 뒤, 동사와 목적어가 연달아 나와야 한다.
글 고치기: 도입부가 너무 무거운 문장
원칙 1: 주어를 최대한 빠르게 보여준다.
1. 주어 앞에 너무 긴 도입구나 도입절을 쓰지 마라
Since most undergraduate students change their major fields of study at least once during their college careers, many more than once, first-year students who are not certain about the program of studies they want to pursue should not load up their schedules to meet requirements for a particular program.
대다수 학부생들이 학업 도중 한 번 이상 자신의 전공분야를 바꾸기 때문에, 자신이 추구할 학업계획이 확실치 않은 1학년 학생은 특정 학과에서 요구하는 필수과목으로 시간표를 채워서는 안 된다.

이렇게 만든 도입절이 너무 길 경우, 문장 오른쪽으로 옮긴다.

4. 절을 등위구문으로 바꾸기

어떠한 문명도 영적, 정신적 삶에서 그토록 빠른 변화를 경험하지 못했다는 사실에 더불어, 일상적 존재의 물질적 조건도 엄청나게 바뀌었다.
No civilization has experienced such rapid alterations in their spiritual and mental lives and in the material conditions of daily existence.
어떠한 문명도 영적, 정신적 삶에서, 또 일상적 존재의 물질적 조건에서 그토록 빠른 변화를 경험하지 못했다.
등위구문을 만드는 기본원칙: 짧은 것 다음에 긴 것
문장이 길더라도 등위연결을 사용하면 구나 절을 연달아 매다는 것보다 훨씬 우아한 문장을 만들 수 있다. 대등한 항목을 연결할 때는, 짧고 간결한 것을 먼저 놓고 길고 복잡한 것을 뒤에 놓는다.
문장이 길어질 때 발생할 수 있는 문제들
문법적으로 결함이 있는 등위연결
등위연결은 기본적으로 절과 절, 전치사구와 전치사구 같이 문장성분이 같은 항목을 연결하는 것이다. 문장성분이 다른 항목을 연결할 경우, 균형이 맞지 않는 병렬구조는 독자들을 혼란에 빠뜨릴 수 있다.
의미적으로 결함이 있는 등위구문
등위항목은 문법적으로만 동등할 뿐만 아니라 개념적으로도 동등할 때 제대로 등위연결이 된 느낌을 준다. and만 넣으면 다 등위연결이 만들어진다고 생각해서는 안 된다.
모호한 연결
등위연결이 너무 길어지면 글을 읽다가 연결구조를 잃어버릴 수도 있고 대명사가 지칭하는 것이 무엇인지 놓칠 수도 있다.
모호한 수식
수식의 대상이 명확하지 않아 의미가 모호해지는 경우가 많다.
댕글링
긴 문장을 쓰다 보면 수식절의 생략된 주어와 주절의 주어가 어긋나는 경우가 발생한다.
