Not Writing a Book Can Be More Difficult than Writing It

There is no question that being an author offers one of the few opportunities to make a great deal of money in a short period of time. There are far greater payoffs, however—adventure, personal satisfaction, and acknowledgment from readers. Most accomplished writers profess that the biggest reward isn’t financial. It’s the thrill of sharing their views of the world with others, and having others tell them that they experienced pleasure—even spiritual fulfillment—from reading their books.

글을 써서 단기간에 큰 돈을 벌 수 있다고 생각하는 사람은 당연히 없을 것이다. 하지만 글을 쓰는 것은 돈보다 훨씬 소중한 보상을 가져다준다. 모험, 개인적인 만족감, 독자들의 인정이다. 성공한 작가들 역시 글을 써서 얻는 가장 큰 보람은 금전적인 보상이 아니라고 고백한다. 세상을 보는 자신의 관점을 남들과 공유할 수 있다는 것만으로도 흥분된다. 더 나아가 책이 재미있었다는, 심지어 ‘영적인 충만’을 느꼈다는 독자의 이야기를 들는다면 가슴 깊이 전율이 느껴질 것이다.

You can also share in these benefits if you are prepared to do all the difficult things that are necessary to write a book and make it a bestseller. If you can’t find a publisher once you have written a book, publish it on your own if you believe in it. Many books that went on to be best-sellers were self-published. But don’t equate success with producing a best-seller. If your book is enjoyed by one person other than yourself, it’s a success—anything over and above this is a bonus.

책을 쓰고, 그 책을 더 많이 팔고자 하는 수고로움을 기꺼이 감수하고자 하는 마음만 있다면 이러한 기쁨은 누구나 느낄 수 있다. 자신이 쓴 책을 내 줄 출판사가 없다면, 자신의 책이 값어치가 있다고 확신한다면, 자기 돈으로 출판하라. 베스트셀러가 된 책 중에는 저자가 직접 출판한 책도 많다. 하지만 베스트셀러가 되는 것을 성공으로 생각하면 안 된다. 자신이 쓴 책이 단 한 사람이라도 감동시켰다면 성공한 것이다. 그 이상의 것은 보너스다.
